MARKET PLACE CELEBRATES NATIONAL HOT DOG MONTH

6/9/2008 : COSTA MESA, CA--Before closing for its annual Orange County Fair break, the Orange County Market Place, the swap meet at the fairgrounds, will offer free rides and entertainment and specials on hot dogs the weekend of July 5 and 6.

Why hot dogs?

July is National Hot Dog Month, the same month America celebrates her independence. And hot dogs are considered one of America’s favorite foods with more than 20 billion hot dogs consumed annually by Americans. During the 4th of July weekend, a majority of the country will be grilling hot dogs on the barbecue. But hot dogs are uniquely American for several reasons according to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council. America has long been called the “melting pot” as it is a nation where immigrants from around the world brought their cultures and blended them with others to create a unique American culture.

Sausage makers from Vienna, Austria where the term “wiener” originates and Frankfurt, Germany where the name “frankfurter” was created are credited with bringing their concoctions to the United States. It was the Americans who popularized the hot dog on a bun and it was local cities and regions that came up with their own personal “dogs” such as the Chicago Dog, the Kansas City Dog and the Corn Dog.
