On Sunday, August 16, the Summer of Love Show brings together six performers recreating the actual vibe, sound and feel of several rock legends from Woodstock including Janis Joplin, John Fogerty, Sly Stone, Jim Hendrix and Arlo Guthrie to name a few.

Both days concerts will be held at noon and 2 p.m. on the Westside Stage and are free with $2 swap meet admission. Children 12 and under are free. Other activities will include free face painting, tie dye vendors, kid’s arts and crafts, Hippie stilt walker $1 hot dogs and sodas and more.

The August calendar will also include a series of qualifying round Karaoke Contests tied in with Karaoke Fest 2009, the largest event of its kind at the Los Angeles County Fair in Pomona. Held during three weekends at the Market Place and presented by Karaoke Scene Magazine, crooners will vie for a spot at the Sept. 5 finals at the Fair. This includes the Crème’ de la Kids series for ages 17 and under on August 15, 22 and 29. Sign ups at 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and contest begins at 11 a.m. The Crème’ de la Crème’ rounds for adults 18 and over has qualifying rounds on August 15, 16, 22, 23 and 29. Sign ups 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Contest at 1 p.m. Semi finals for the qualifiers will be on Sunday, August 30: Crème’ de la Kids at 11 a.m. and Crème’ de la Crème’ at 1 p.m. Registration is $5. The 10th Annual Elvis Festival returns Sunday, August 23 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is an all day tribute to Elvis Presley, the king of rock and roll. Featuring Elvis tribute artists, Jailhouse Rockers of California Elvis Presley Fan Club, stilt Elvis, Elvis therapy dog, A Hunk O’ Pink Bubble Gum Blowing Contest, Rock A Hula Hoop Contest, Crème de la King Elvis Karaoke Contest, other activities and strolling entertainment. After the success of the Spring Concert Series at the Market Place, a Fall Concert Series has been added for several weekends in September and October. All concerts are free with $2 swap meet admission or with a canned food item for the Orange County Food Bank. Shows are held at noon and 2 p.m. unless otherwise indicated. The line up for September is as follows: Saturday, September 5, Hot August Nights: A Tribute to Neil Diamond with Dean Colley; Sunday, September 6, roots, rock and country singer James Intveld from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. with Anaheim’s rockabilly songstress Amber Foxx as the opening act from noon to 1 p.m.; Saturday, September 12, Gregory Wolfe performs as Rod Stewart; Sunday, September 13, blues veteran Rod Piazza and The Mighty Flyers; Saturday, September 26, Mark Wood & The Parrot Head Band, a Jimmy Buffet Tribute; Sunday, September 27, Orange County based rockabilly bands, Big Sandy and the Fly Rite Boys headlines with opening act Kirk Wall and the Anaheim Playboys at 11 a.m.

October concerts include the following: Saturday, October 10, Brian Lynn Jones Band and his Misfit Cowboys in a Rock ‘n’ Tonk Country show with Kelly Boys Country Dance Lessons from 11:30 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.; Saturday, October 17, Don’t Stop Believing, a Journey Tribute and Sunday, October 18, Blues show with the James Harman Band.

Also added is the 1st Orange County Accordion Festival, ”The Big Squeeze” on Sunday, October 11 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Showcasing a variety of traditional and contemporary accordion music including Cajun, Zydeco, Russian folk, Polka, Tejano and other styles. Main stage acts feature prominent accordionists and include Raving Polka (aka Limpopo) performing Russian folk with a twist of jazz, blues, dance and comedy from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Grammy nominee for Best Zydeco/Cajun Music , Lisa Haley and the Zydekats take the stage from 12:45 p.m. to 2 p.m. Los Fabulocos with Kid Ramos will spice things up with a Tex-Mex blend of traditional stylings, as well as rhythm and blues and rockabilly music from 2:30 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. Other stages of accordion music from local and regional groups and soloists, demos, dance lessons, and educational presentations will be offered.

Returning events in October include the 2nd Annual Fall Pet Days, Saturday and Sunday, October 3 and 4, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Presented by the Animal Assistance League of Orange County and in conjunction with National Pet Wellness Month it will feature pet wellness information, adoptions, spay and neuter information, training tips, specialty rescue groups, pet related vendors, nonprofit pet organizations, animal welfare education, guest speakers and demonstrations. Also, the 12th Annual Trick or Treat Festival and Halloween Hearse Show and Procession returns Sunday, October 25 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. It offers free daytime trick or treating for kids in costume, gigantic pumpkin carving exhibition by Farmer Mike (now author of “Farmer Mike Grows Giant pumpkins“), first 500 kids receive his book, free face painting, Goldilocks and the Three Buccaneers puppet show, hearse show and procession, radio personality Dr. Demento, Freak Show Deluxe, vampire poets, Magic Castle Junior Society Magician Mark Gibson, Crimebo the Clown‘s Crime Trivia Contest and Macabre balloon making, costume contest, The Ukulady, tall witches and other ghoulish fun along with a blood drive to support local hospitals.

In its 40th year the Orange County Market Place is held every weekend (except during the Orange County Fair) at the O.C. Fair and Event Center in Costa Mesa. Hours are 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and includes nearly 1,000 merchants, fresh produce, gourmet foods to go, artisans and crafters, manufactured homes, kid’s play area, inflatable attractions, hair salon, food concessions and more.
