HONKY TONK FOURSOME WINS SECOND ROUND OF SHOWDOWN

Costa Mesa, CA (May 10, 2010)--Two brothers and two of their friends, known as The Palominos when they take the stage, were the winners in the second round of the West Coast Rockabilly Showdown on Saturday, May 8 at the Orange County Market Place, the weekend swap meet at the O.C. Fair & Event Center. The San Diego based band will return for the Showdown Finals on Saturday, June 5 when the top four bands vie for $2,500 in cash awards and the opportunity to open for rockabilly pioneer James Intveld on Sunday, June 20.
 The Palominos, formed in 2006 by brothers Thomas and James Zurek, playing guitar and bass respectively, out of their desire to keep an era of West Coast honky-tonk sounds from the 1960’s in the forefront today. Their music is inspired by Wynn Stewart, Buck Owens, Ralph Mooney and others who recorded for traditional country music label Toppa Records. Along with Lance Hawkins on vocals and guitar and Mike Marcott on drums, the quartet, clad in cowboy attire themed from the 1960’s ,play a mix of obscure country classics and their own originals infused with their signature “twanging.”
 The Showdown kicked off on Saturday, May 1 and is a first time event at the Market Place which pits unsigned rockabilly bands. The top four bands, which now includes The Palominos and Karyling Abbeygate who won the first round, will be vying for the first place cash award of $1,000 and the opportunity to open for James Intveld, a rockabilly music veteran on Sunday, June 20. The second place finisher wins $750; third place wins $500 and third place $250. The semi-finalists were selected via electronic audition submittals and include bands primarily from Southern California, though the lead vocalist in one of the competitors flew in from Nashville, Tennessee. Judging is done by an audience voice meter. Daniel Castillo aka DJ WINE-O is hosting the Showdown events. Meanwhile the Showdown competition continues at the Market Place this Saturday, May 15 with three more bands taking the stage. Brian Jay and the Last Call Boys perform at noon, Amber Foxx at 1 p.m. and the Hi Lo Trio at 2 p.m. The last round of the Showdown is Saturday, May 29 with the Blue Collar Combo at noon, Becky and the Blacktones at 1 p.m. and the 454’s at 2 p.m. In addition to the concerts, classic cars are on display along with specialty rockabilly vendors amidst the rest of the Orange County Market Place venue of merchants, food operations and other attractions. The Showdown concerts and swap meet admission is FREE with the donation of a canned food item for the Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County. Regular admission is $2 and children 12 and under are always free. In its 41st year, the swap meet operates every Saturday and Sunday except during the annual Orange County Fair. Hours are 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and features nearly 1,000 vendors, food concessions, fresh produce, artisans and crafters, manufactured homes, kid’s playground and much more.
